Two typescripts illustrated with photographs that document trips in August 1928 and April 1932 to convict labor camps established by California prisons for the California Highway Commission. Additional imagery documents Hearst Castle in 1920 and 1936 and Yosemite National Park in 1920. One volume documents a trip to inspect camps in northern California in August 1928 by Stanley; James Bernard Holohan, the warden at the California State Prison at San Quentin; and Uriah Absalom Smith, superintendent of the convict labor camps. They visited camps in the vicinities of Lower Lake, Oroville, Paxton, Red Bluff, and Redding. The volume with spine title, "Hearst Ranch," documents a trip to inspect two camps in Monterey County near Plaskett and Slates Hot Springs in April 1932 by Stanley, Holohan, Smith, and Edward I. Butler, a judge in the Superior Court of Marin County. The volume also documents visits to Pinnacles National Monument and Hearst Castle. Twenty loose photographic prints by Stanley accompanying the volume depict Hearst Castle and its environs, as do a dozen loose images created by Malcolm Beelby during a visit to Hearst Castle in June 1936. There is also a single image of a young girl riding a burro in a campground of Yosemite National Park in 1920.
